It has become a favorite for those who want to retain high corrosion resistance, improve substrate functionality, reduce the risk of galvanic corrosion, and improve rubber to metal bondability. Prior to using this alloy, the use of cadmium was most often employed. Cadmium has since lost popularity as it involves the use of highly toxic substances such as cyanide.

Zinc Nickel Alloy Plating: The Process

The process of depositing zinc nickel plating does not involve cyanide, but it does employ an alkaline electrolyte in the deposition of zinc-nickel alloy coatings. In some cases the nickel content can be as high as 17%, however, the primary range is 12-15%. Our completely modernized rack plating technology provides excellent results that are designed to meet our customer’s needs.

The Advantages

The popularity of zinc nickel plating resides in its ability to provide two specific qualities: moderate cost and excellent resistance to corrosion. Among the many other advantages of this plating process:

– Attractive appearance
– Blister free deposits
– Highly resistant to corrosion
– Excellent even or uniform coating thickness
– High heat resistance
– Resistance to abrasion
– Resistance to UV light
– Does not support galvanic corrosion when in electrical contact with aluminum
– Readily able to accept clear and/or black trivalent passivates
– Can be bonded to in rubber to metal applications

These properties all add to the increased interest and demand by the automotive industry to protect their products with highly corrosion resistant, but cost-effective protection against the natural and ongoing wear-and-tear of the environments in which they will function.
