This specification covers the pretreatment, paint materials and some processing requirements for waterborne, black, cathodic electrodeposition primers (ELPO or e-coat) generally used on small parts. Paint durability requirements are also included. Exterior body metal referenced to this specification must meet the provisions outlined under section 1.2, Typical Applications. These requirements apply to ELPO coating applications that require low, medium and high film thickness. This specification is intended to assure that the ELPO materials used on parts supplied to General Motors are high quality and environmentally acceptable. Materials containing lead or hexavalent chromium are no longer acceptable on parts referenced to this specification.
